Extract the article, not the page furniture
A URL usually includes navigation, related links, cookie messages, author boxes, advertisements, comments, and repeated site labels. Summarizing the raw page can give these elements the same weight as the article. Identify the main title, byline, publication date, deck, article body, headings, captions, and update notice first.
Capture provenance before processing
Record the canonical URL, page title, author, publication date, access date, and any visible update date. Save the extracted text or a snapshot when the page may change. A bookmark summary is more useful when the reader can trace it back to the exact version that was summarized.
Recognize article structure
News reports often lead with the most important fact. Essays may delay the thesis. Research explainers may move from background to methods, findings, and limitations. Product pages mix persuasion with specifications. Ask the summarizer to identify the genre and structure before it decides what is central.
Separate source claims from linked background
An article may quote experts, summarize reports, or link to earlier coverage. The final summary should distinguish what the article directly reports, what a quoted source claims, and what the summarizer infers. Do not silently import facts from linked pages unless they are included as separate sources.
Use an evidence-aware output
A practical article summary can include the thesis, five supporting points, key names and dates, evidence used, stated limitations, and unresolved questions. For controversial topics, add a section titled “Perspectives represented” rather than flattening disagreements into a false consensus.
Handle paywalls and incomplete pages honestly
If only a headline, excerpt, or partial article is available, label the result as a preview summary. Do not reconstruct missing paragraphs from search snippets or general knowledge. A smaller accurate summary is more useful than a confident fabrication.
Turn bookmarks into a knowledge system
Use consistent fields: title, source, date, one-sentence takeaway, key points, topic tags, credibility notes, and next action. Deduplicate syndicated versions and periodically review whether a saved item still supports the claim attached to it.

Copy a reusable pattern from the summary prompt library, or use the structured JSON schema when URL summaries need to feed a database or decision workflow.
